Garden Blitz
In 2018 schools and community groups were invited to apply for a one day garden makeover to highlight the benefits of the products produced from the garden organics service and demonstrate how ‘Ít all comes back to you’ – compliments of garden organics!
Millfield Public School, Natural Steps Preschool, Maitland Tutorial Centre, Metford Public School and Singleton Heights Public School, each received the help of a professional green thumb (including design, labour, plants soil conditioning, mulch and irrigation systems) to turn underutilised spaces into outdoor learning and meeting areas for staff students and their community. Our team, school staff, students and volunteers had a great time and a wonderful learning opportunity. By choosing to use your garden organics bin to dispose of your excess garden vegetation you have helped make this project possible.
The mulch, compost and soil conditioners used in the garden makeovers are produced by Australian Native Landscapes from the material collected in the garden organics bins. Just goes to show what we an achieve when we put the right thing in the right bin and how what was once wasted to landfill gets a new life for all the generations to enjoy. From garden organics bin to garden bed – completing the cycle !
Cessnock – Millfield Public School
See how the entrance to Millfield Public School was given a revamp by the students, community and Cessnock Council’s garden organics service as part Garden Blitz 2018.
The high quality organic soil conditioner used will encourage healthy plant growth and provide drought resilience for the summer to come and was capped off with seating and table made from recycled plastic bags.
Cessnock – Natural Steps Preschool
Carol and her staff needed some help to transform a bare area of their playground into an edible garden and seating area with a bridge over a dry creek bed to provide creative spaces for hands on learning and exploration.
Maitland – Maitland Tutorial Centre
See how Maitland Council’s garden organics service Garden Blitz team came to the rescue of the staff and students of the Maitland Tutorial Centre and gave their school garden and outdoor learning centre a huge one day makeover using quality organic soil conditioner made by Australian Native Landscapes from the material collected in the garden organics bin. Maitland – Metford Public School
Metford Public asked for help to develop a native and bush tucker garden to enhance their Yarning Circle with pathways to explore the garden and seating area. With a high Aboriginal population within the school and community, this garden area will support the strengthening of cultural understandings and sense of belonging with opportunities for learning through tasting and cooking of native plants as well as a meeting place for students and the community.
Singleton -Singleton Heights Public School
See how an underused area of Singleton Heights Public School was transformed into a multi-cultural sensory outdoor learning area using material collected through the council garden organics bin and processed by Australian Native Landscapes into a high quality soil conditioner and compost to rebuild and drought proof the soil together. There’s also buddy seats and activity boards made from recycled plastic bags!
